Living more sustainably doesn’t mean giving up all the stuff you enjoy or changing your whole life overnight. In fact, it works much better when you don’t. At The Green Kind, we’ve learned that it start’s with something much simpler – small, thoughtful and intentional changes that fit into your everyday life.
Most of us don’t want, or need, more pressure or a long list of things to “get right”. We want to do better and we just need to know how to make a start.

A Different Way to Think About Sustainability
Sustainable living can feel like a big, complicated idea. But in reality, it’s much closer to home. It’s in the way you shop, cook, clean, travel, and use what you already have.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being a little more aware—and making a few changes that feel manageable. Because when lots of people make small changes, it really does add up. More importantly, those changes can make life feel simpler, calmer, and more intentional too.
Start Small (Really Small)
If you’re at the beginning, the most important thing is to not try to do everything, all at once. Just pick one or two things that feel easy to start with.
That might be:
- bringing a reusable bag when you shop
- switching off lights when you leave a room
- using up food before buying more
- carrying a water bottle when you’re out
These aren’t big, dramatic changes. But they’re the kind that turn into habits—and habits are what make the difference over time.
A Simple Way to Approach It
At The Green Kind, I think about sustainable living in a simple, flexible way:
Simplify → Refill → Restore → Gather → Grow
You don’t need to follow this perfectly—it’s just a gentle guide.
Here’s what that can look like in real life:
Simplify
This is where most people begin and it’s about reducing waste and making everyday life feel a bit lighter.
You might:
- buy less, and choose things more carefully
- reduce single-use plastics where you can
- get into the habit of using what you already have
- look into decluttering a small area of your home
It’s not about doing everything—it’s about noticing what feels easy to change.
Refill
This is about replacing throwaway habits (or things) with ones that last. Once you’ve simplified a little, refill becomes easier.
You might:
- carry a reusable bottle or coffee cup
- look for refill options locally
- choose products with less packaging
- reuse containers instead of constantly buying new
Over time, these swaps start to feel normal.
Restore
Restore is about looking after what you have and keeping things in use for longer instead of replacing them straight away. This is often overlooked but makes a big difference.
You might:
- repair something instead of throwing it away
- take better care of clothes so they last longer
- try simple upcycling projects at home
- fix small things before they turn into bigger problems
It doesn’t have to be big. Even small acts of care or simple maintanance can change how you see the things you already own.
Gather
Sustainable living isn’t something you have to do on your own. It’s actually much easier and enjoyable when it’s shared
This is about connection.
You might:
- swap ideas (and things) with friends or family – maybe join a clothes swap or similar event
- join a local group or community project
- support local businesses
- take part in workshops or events
This is when things start to feel more connected.
Grow
Grow is about creating a way of living that’s more sustainable long-term. You can start to see that, over time, these small steps build into something bigger.
You might find yourself:
- grow herbs and food at home
- build new skills
- making more intentional choices
- supporting local initiatives and get more involved in projects in your community
There’s no rush to get here. It happens naturally as your confidence grows.
Once you get to this part with one or two areas of your life you can reevaluate where you want to be and maybe start again with another part.
What If It Feels Difficult?
It’s completely normal for this to feel challenging at times. Life is busy, not everything is accessible for everyone. And, not every change is realistic straight away.
So instead of trying to do everything, focus on what is possible. If something feels too expensive, too time-consuming, or just not practical right now—that’s okay.
Sustainable living should support your life, not complicate it.
A Gentle Next Step
If you take anything from this, let it be this:
You don’t need to do everything.
You just need to start somewhere.
Pick one small change this week and see how it feels. That’s enough.
